The catastrophic cuts in all social services make spending billions on Trident obscene. The Lib Dems and the Labour Party are rethinking their position on Trident. The non-nuclear states are holding a UN conference on multilateral disarmament next year.
Please write or email Norman Lamb - email@example.com
(1) urge him to argue within his party to oppose its renewal. Norman opposed it himself in the recent Commons vote.
(2) urge him to ask the government to support the UN conference on Multi-Lateral Disarmament next year. This has been called for by 107 non-nuclear states who have given up waiting for the nuclear states to honour their promise of disarmament. So far our government has not agreed to go to the conference. This is total hypocrisy – claiming to be in favour of multi-lateral disarmament, but deliberately blocking attempts to produce it.
It is best to write in your own words, but here are some ideas:
The overwhelming and indiscriminate power of just one Trident warhead ( about 8 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb) is such that its use would break all our obligations under international and domestic laws on the conduct of war. Specifically about the protection of civilians and the environment and the need to be proportionate.
This was spelt out by His Excellency Judge Mohammed Bedjaoui, the former President of the International Court of Justice at The Hague, as long ago as 2011. Using Trident would be suicidal as well as genocidal and affect future generations.
It is no good saying that Trident would never need to be used, because maintaining or renewing it would also be unlawful, and would in addition break our obligations under the Non-proliferation Treaty to negotiate in good faith and in a timely manner, for nuclear disarmament. Our government must support the UN Conference on Multi-lateral disarmament next year.
Keeping Trident encourages other nations to want nuclear weapons themselves, increasing internationl tension and the risk of accidents. The money spent on this dangerous, destabilising and illegal system would be much better spent on improving services in the UK.
